Back-to-School: Successful Day at School Begins with Successful Mornings at Home

Cupertino, CA (PRWEB) August 11, 2009 -- Preparing children for school does not need to be a daunting task. Simple tools and a few minutes of organizing will help children show up at school, ready and eager to learn. Children who learn the right morning routine at home lay the foundation for good time management and study skills in class. Moschel Kadokura, inventor of On-Task On-Time for Kids (http://timelymatters.com/), has seen organization skills work wonders for children. She offers these simple tips to ensure a successful launch into the school day.

•    Set up an age-appropriate routine to help your child get ready for school. Know what your child is able to carry out independently. This will give him a sense of accomplishment before his school day even begins. Also, teachers have a routine for students to follow as soon as they start their school day. Starting a routine at home helps your child transition into his school day.

•    Provide tools so that your child doesn't need to be reminded or aided by a parent to complete her routine. This might be a chore chart, or Kadokura's organizing tool On-Task On-Time for Kids (http://timelymatters.com/). This visual timer illustrates a child's routine by using colorful, time-allocated task stickers. These customized routines for children (ages 5 - 12) provide visual reminders and eliminate the need for parental nagging. Your child feels the confidence of completing her routine on her own.

•    Turn off or remove all possible distractions. Even if you are watching the news on TV, your child could get off-task with a simple animated advertisement. Allowing your child to focus on a schedule or the On-Task (http://timelymatters.com/timer.html)unit, will ensure success.

•    Encourage and reward success. This can be a simple verbal approval for a job well done, or a more elaborate reward system.

Following these steps will ensure that children start off their morning ready to learn. She comments, "On-Task has worked wonders. …things are very calm, and she really looks forward to using it. There is no nagging, yelling or getting too frustrated. Her teacher has even noticed a difference in her time management skills at school."

Too often, parents yell and nag their children to get ready for school. Kadokura asks parents, "How would you feel starting your work day late, harassed, and disorganized? Would you be able to focus on your job if your spouse yelled at you while dropping you off at your workplace?" Kadokura adds, "Think of your child's school as her workplace; your goal is for her to start off her work day feeling empowered, confident, and ready to learn."
